Fenneropenaeus indicus is a significant aquaculture species in Iran, Saudi Arabia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Africa (Hoffman et al., 1998; UNEP, 2002).
Throughout South-East Asia, F. indicus is one of the major
species in the region's commercial fishery. It is the most important
species caught off the east coast of Africa and is probably the most
important commercial species in India, especially in the inshore fishery
and in the rice field farming around Kerala southwest India.
The species is of
importance, both for offshore fishing and in pond culture, in
Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
